Teak Furniture - A Cut Above The Rest

By Jennifer Akre As you shop around for outdoor furniture, you will notice that much of the higher quality pieces are made from teak wood, and for good reason. Teak furniture is not just sturdy and durable, but also very beautiful with rich warm tones. Manufacturers obtain their wood from different countries but the two that always produce top quality is Thailand and Indonesia. In addition to being used as teak furniture, this type of wood actually has a long history, having been used for shipbuilding along with other forms of construction jobs. For centuries, teak has been the preferred wood since it is extremely strong and resilient. In fact, centuries ago, the people of Malaysia and India played a big role in getting word about this amazing wood, sharing about its ability to handle a wide array of outdoor elements. Then, people during the Victoria era took full advantage of the many benefits offered by teak and began to make their own style of teak furniture as far back as the early 19th century. In addition to teak furniture created for home use, teak furniture was also designed in the form of benches to enhance local parks and public buildings. Today, you still find teak furniture at the top of the list when it comes to wood outdoor furniture. While teak offers several benefits, the durability is considered a huge factor for individuals looking to buy patio furniture. For example, the teak wood coming from Central Asia is grown and matured in the tropical rainforests where it must weather varying environmental changes. Because of that, teak wood is naturally a great choice for outdoor furniture, as well as indoor furniture. For this reason, people will make the investment in teak furniture, knowing it will last for many, many years. A common problem faced with other types of woods used for outdoor furniture is insects and rot. Again, by choosing teak furniture, you get the benefit of having wood that naturally fights both of these inconveniences. The primary reason is that teak, unlike most other woods, is saturated with oils that fight off insects, mold, mildew, and various forms of fungi. With teak growing in the rainforest, for it to survive, it must have the high concentrations of oil as protection against the moisture. The interesting thing about this is that even when teak becomes old and dies it is still saturated with natural oils. Finally as mentioned, of all woods used, you will discover that teak furniture has a rich, warm appearance. The color is typically a medium to dark caramel that will often have swirls of other colors. As the teak furniture is designed and shined up, it glows and looks absolutely beautiful. Therefore, if you want gorgeous furniture that can be used for weekend entertainment, you cannot go wrong by choosing teak furniture! Without doubt, your family and friends will be envious! Jennifer Akre is a successful business owner of numerous furniture websites such as http://www.MoreThanTeak.com . Her sites offer product and information about teak furniture and other decor and furniture styles for your home or garden. Consumers - Fight Back With FTC’s Do Not Call Registry

By James H. Dimmitt The Federal Trade Commission has rolled out its National Do Not Call Registry and the registration site already has over 700,000 registrants. This is great news for consumers who have grown tired of annoying sales calls by pesky telemarketers. Consumers can register online at www.donotcall.gov. You can register up to three personal phone numbers at one time. This is a free service established by the FTC and your do not call registration is good for a 5-year period. Additionally, a toll-free number is also available for those who want to register by phone. The toll-free number is 1-888-382-1222. You must call from the phone number you want to register when using the toll free registration service. The toll free number is only accessible to those states west of the Mississippi River in the initial week of registration. The program will spread nationwide the following week. Telemarketers will be required to clean their call lists by matching their list against the national do not call list every 90 days starting in September 2003. Companies who call listed people will be subject to fines of up to $11,000 per violation. Enforcement will begin in October 2003. You will be able to file a do not call violation complaint online or by phone. Over two dozen states already have their own do-not-call lists and most of these states plan to incorporate their lists into the national registry. If your state is one of them, you do not need to re-register for the national registry. CAUTION: There have been reports of scam artists and identity thieves calling people to request or confirm personal information for this new registry. The FTC has posted this warning to consumers on their web page: The FTC will not allow private companies or other such third parties to “pre-register” consumers for the national Do Not Call registry. Web sites or phone solicitations that claim they can or will register a consumer’s name or phone number on a national list especially those that charge a fee are a scam. Consumers will be able to register directly with the FTC, or through some state governments, but never private companies. Consumers should also be aware that some types of telephone solicitation are exempt from the do-not-call protection. Companies from which you have purchased, leased or rented from in the previous 18 months are exempt. Also charities, surveys, and calls on behalf of politicians will be exempt from this service. The National Do Not Call Registry does not cover business to business calls. About The Author 2003, Your Free Credit Report Now Author: James H. Dimmitt. Marketing Research: Know Your Customers

By Otilia Otlacan Having a competitive advantage over other businesses targeting the same market as yours is a basic, survival must: many choose to develop longterm relationships with their customers, in an attempt to create such competitive advantage. Knowing your customers is crucial, and it is quite a different thing from knowing their buying behavior. It is every marketer’s dream to have real, up-to-date information about consumers: their preferences, opinions, attitudes, beliefs, interests, education level, behavior are the base of understanding their needs. Businesses often employ Marketing research to determine the consumers’ degree of acceptance of a new product, and the reason behind this is the fact that launching a new product without a real demand would involve much more costs than actual market research. Plus, a failed product launch is not only damaging for a business’ finances but also its image and reputation. Any marketing research upon consumers’ profile should address at least the following questions: Who makes the market of a product? A company active on any given market must ask itself who its customers are. Are they mostly young people, or perhaps elderly? Women or men? What would their income levels be? This is the demographic information that can be a starting point in creating a customer profile. What do people buy? Is there a certain product consumers seem to prefer? Can we detect a trend of migrating to a given product? Will the market accept new products or changes in existing ones? These questions could offer a perspective on the mechanisms triggering buying decisions; the answers could indicate just how open to changes customers are. Why do people buy? Many businesses ignore the reasons why their customers choose one product or another. While we all know that impulse buying is a reality, most purchases are still made on reasons of benefits, value, satisfaction. Hence, we should ask ourselves “Why certain products are more popular among consumers and are perceived as being superior to others?” Who takes the buying decision? It is critical to know who is actively involved in the buying process, as the users of a product are not necessarily the ones to buy it. For example, food items destined to children are normally bought by a parent, which means the advertising messages should be aimed at parents and not at children. Identifying the real decision makers is an important part of any consumers research study. How is the buying decision taken? What are the reasons followed by consumers when making a buying decision? A marketer should remember that these reasons are likely to be influenced by a variety of social, cultural, economic factors. When do people buy? Some products are requested and are offered only in certain periods of a year, as demand can be driven by social or cultural factors (think of seasonal holidays, for example). Consumers’ lifestyle might also dictate the day or week when shopping is done. Where do people buy? Identifying the preferred location for people to buy is yet another important task in researching consumers’ behaviour. Where do they buy from? Supermarkets? The corner shop? New, creative venues can be employed, such as e-commerce web sites. Marketing research relies on other sciences as well, such as psychology or sociology. Being able to develop the products consumers need, and then market them in accordance to the consumers’ behavior lay the basis for competitive advantages and shape the strategic decisions a business must make. What are Dental Implants?

By Kevin Stith Dental implants offer many advantages over traditional tooth replacement procedures. Gone are the days when patients were forced to simply wear unsightly or uncomfortable caps, crowns or dentures. Often insecure and artificial looking, these solutions left people unable to talk and eat with confidence. Dental implants minimize the risks associated with crowns and caps, while maximizing the rewards by producing natural looking, healthy and most of all safer teeth that let recipients smile with conviction. Dental implants are essentially artificial teeth that that are placed within the jaw. Although they are typically more aesthetically pleasing that the alternatives like crowns or dentures, the real reason many people are turning to dental implants to replace their missing teeth boils down to safety. Implants are a safer, more tooth-friendly procedure that has little to no adverse effect on neighboring teeth or gums. When a patient elects to insert a bridge in support of missing or decayed teeth, adjacent teeth are usually altered to support the procedure. Over time this leads to gum and dental erosion. With implants, the replacement tooth looks virtually identical to the real thing, and the patient suffers nothing in terms of later tooth decay. Today there are two dental implant procedures that most periodontists employ: Endosteal is the most common procedure. Here, various types of screws, cylinders or blades are selected for insertion directly into the jawbone, with each implant holding one or more prosthetic teeth. Subperiosteal is a less common alternative that is used for patients who are unable to wear dentures and have minimal bone height. The implants are placed on top of the jaw with the metal framework inserted into gums. Dental implants typically have a very high success rate, but typically require a patient that is in good overall health. Since we are dealing with invasive surgery, candidates who experience advanced gum disease or weak jaw bones may not be approved for the procedure. But for those that do qualify, they can expect a healthy, natural-looking smile that will, provided they continue with proper dental hygiene, last for years to come. Locations offering dental implant surgery are located all across the country, particularly in the Northeast (New York, New Jersey and Boston), Nevada (Las Vegas and Summerlin), Los Angeles as well as various locations in Canada. Dental Implants Info provides comprehensive information on the procedure and cost of standard and mini dental implants, and focuses on the Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York regions. Dental Implants Info is the sister site of Rhinoplasty Web. How to Find Peace During Overwhelming Stress or Depression

By Carolyn McFann Stress is everywhere nowadays, but there are ways to cope to make life more comfortable during tough times. I am not a doctor, but have had suffered with depression and anxiety in my past. Due to much therapy, reading books and learning different ways to relax on my own, my life has drastically improved. When stress happens, I automatically use techniques to relax my mind, that work well for me. Here are some ways to cope that I’ve used in my recovery, to help give peace and positivity during stressful times. When feeling depressed and stressed out, don’t watch the news. Watch comedy, or something else less “heavy”. Watch world or local happenings later when you want, but when feeling on “overload”, don’t watch anything potentially depressing or stressful. This isn’t avoidance, it is self-preservation and helping yourself to regulate your mood. When the mind is on overload, it can grind to a halt and temporarily shut down, resulting in blocks of memory loss or other symptoms (feeling on “auto pilot”, for example). The goal is calm and peace so be careful what you subject yourself to when anxious or depressed. Make your atmosphere relaxing in different ways. Certain colors in your living environment promote calm, read up on which are best and use them. Listen to quiet, or calming music. Dim the lights a little. Whatever helps you to feel relaxed. Some light candles, others read something pleasant. Do something that is entertaining yet not overly stimulating. I watch a movie, or write in my diary. Whatever is comfortable for you. Observe your pet (or someone else’s). Pet them, and watch how they just take it all in, happily. Cats are experts at relaxation, see how calm they are when relaxed. Just stroking a dog or cat is helpful during depressing or stressful times, don’t underestimate it. Animals can help take your thoughts off of your stress and onto them, it’s their job. Take care of your body. Avoid any stimulating beverages or foods. I love coffee, and have switched to half decaf to help improve my stress levels. Also, if your blood sugar isn’t at the correct levels, that can add to stress, I’ve been told. If you haven’t eaten, eat something with protein in it, like almonds, meat or cheese. The body reacts to what is put in it so treat it with kindness. Try different relaxation methods and see what is most useful to your needs. I like guided imagery CD’s, where a calm story is told by a narrator. It helps to redirect the mind and think of a more serene setting. Let go of control, let yourself experiment with different methods. Learn up on relaxation. Other ways to relax include self-hypnosis (CD’s and DVD’s by a reputable therapist), meditation, and learning about Buddhist views (which have many different calming techniques for relaxation). I’m not a Buddhist but some of their philosophies are interesting to me. Someone I know listens to the mellow sound of Gregorian Chants to relax his mind. Find what you like and use it as a tool in your arsenal against depression and anxiety. Listen to positive messages, lectures or sermons. Surround yourself with positivity, especially when you don’t feel cheerful. Depression can rob a person of positive feelings, so to fight that, record positive speeches off of tv or record yourself reading your own personal affirmations. Listen to them in your own voice to bring calmness and positivity back. When nobody is there for you, you can be there for yourself, and recording your own messages to yourself can be a powerful boost to morale. Focus on one thing at a time. Try not to to do too many things all at the same time. Simplify and stop for a moment, take a deep breath. The idea is to unclutter a busy mind, and give it some breathing room to regroup and feel more peaceful. Exercise. It helps your body produce chemicals that naturally lift the mood. Focus your mind wholeheartedly on what you are doing. Whatever sport makes you happy, from walking to horseback riding. Just get moving and help your body both mentally and physically. Listening to mellow music while exercising may help as well. It is possible to train your mind to relax in times of stress. I have done it, and you can too. By using whatever techniques work best for you personally, you will be able to weather storms and spring back from them quicker. It just takes practise and the willpower to train the mind. Don’t give up, it is well worth the effort it takes. Carolyn McFann is a scientific and nature illustrator, who owns Two Purring Cats Design Studio. How Many Feet Do You Have?

By Carmel Baird How many feet do you have? Or I should say, how many feet does your sewing machine have? Once upon a time there was a sewing machine with one foot, one foot for sewing a straight stitch. Now there are sewing machines with many feet and they all do a different job for you. They certainly make life at the sewing machine more enjoyable and easier. Some of these feet come with your machine and your manual will have the information for you on what application they are used for. By taking the time to try these attachments for your sewing machine, you will find a whole new creative side to yourself, and you thought your machine was for sewing. I’d like to take you through some of these sewing feet and what they can do. Your machine comes with the straight stitch foot and a zig-zag foot, these tow are normally standard. Some machines come with other feet as standard to that make or model and then there are the extra feet you can purchase to do those wonderful sewing jobs for you. I’d like to take you through these feet. These are the names as I know them, some of these may have different names with different manufacturers but the stitches they will be the same. Braid Foot The narrow and wide braid feet both have a hook on the front of the foot slip and a narrow tunneled groove underneath. It is used when you want to add cording or braid. The cord is laced through the hook and under the foot slip into the tunneled groove. There is a braid-guide attachment you can attach near the presser foot shank to keep the braid or cord taut while stitching, no tangles. Buttonhole Foot The buttonhole foot can be recognized by it’s rectangle shaped foot with thin extensions at either end, a raised square on top of the foot and small grooves on the bottom of the foot. It is similar to some embroidery feet. It makes sewing buttonholes very easy. Eyelet Foot I don’t know how many of you would want to be sewing eyelets but if that is what you want to do then this is the foot for you. It is a very specialized foot. It is a H-shaped flat foot, has a small cylinder shape attachment to the top surface. Gathering Foot This one is very handy. It is a small L-shaped foot with a slot on the bottom side. The bottom of the foot is higher at the front than the back. This causes the foot to rock when attached to the machine. This rocking creates the gathers. You set the stitch length at a higher setting to get more gathers and a normal setting to get less gathers. If you are gathering a single piece of fabric, feed the fabric under the foot or use the side slot to stitch one piece of fabric to another. Narrow Bias Binder Foot This foot has a coned shaped, slotted cylinder on the topside of the foot. It folds and applies the bias binding in one step. Open-Toe Embroidery Foot This foot will give you a view of your work so you can see the satin or decorative stitches between the widely spaced toes. There are grooves underneath to allow room for the stitches. Pintuck Foot This is a flat foot with grooves cut in underneath. This foot, used with a double needle will pinch and stitch lines of straight stitching in narrow raised patterns. The number of grooves will determine the spacing between the lines and the number of pattern lines. The three groove pintuck foot is used on heavier fabric or for wider designs and the for and five groove pintuck foot will be better on lightweight fabric or for narrower patterns. Rolled Hemming Foot If you want small double folded hems then this is the foot for you. Use it for medium to lightweight fabric. The groove on the bottom of the foot is the width of the finished hem. You will be able to sew hems with a straight stitch, zig-zag or decorative stitch. This has so many uses, think of lingerie, ruffles, curtains, scarves, table linen, wonderful. Roller Foot This is a very handy foot, the metal roller feeds the fabric and keeps it from stretching and bunching, great for thick, heavier fabric and fabric with a nap. Often called an even feed foot. Ruffler Foot This is a large foot with many components and you use it to evenly space ruffles and pleats. If you want to ruffle bigger jobs like curtains, skirts, home decor items then this foot will help enormously. Teflon Foot This foot is coated in teflon and we all know teflon is non-stick so this foot will stop those difficult fabrics like leather, suede or textured fabric. It allows the fabric to glide under rather than being fed. You can get it as a zig-zg or a straight stitch foot. Walking Foot This foot has teeth rather than a roller to feed the fabric evenly. Welding Foot This has two narrow claw like prongs instead of a small hole in the middle and is used for straight stitching close to the edge of a hem or seam Zipper Foot This is one of the best feet ever made for sewing machines, it looks like a straight stitch foot cut in half and then the outside edges joined in the center. well, that is the more common types of the sewing machine feet available. Most of these would be available for most machines on the market today. If you intend to do special sewing jobs then investing in the foot for that particular job could save you so much time. Cold Sores - A Pandemic?

By Denny Bodoh Cold sores virus infects an incredible 89% of the world population, the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) estimates. YES - and 67% of those infected with the cold sores virus will have at least one cold sore event in the next 12 months. And 47.5% of those folks will have multiple cold sores episodes during that period. Cold sores are one of our most contagious viruses - and one of our oldest. Even in ancient Rome, an epidemic of cold sores caused Emperor Tiberius to outlaw kissing in public ceremonies. As a global epidemic, or “pandemic”, there is no better example than cold sores. NO - cold sores, unlike bird flu, aren’t life threatening. But, let’s be frank, cold sores are hideous - and they’re painful. On top of that, cold sores cause flu like symptoms such as fever and swollen lymph glands in a lot of people. Cold sores last 3 to 4 weeks on average - a long time for you to be socially sidelined! They shout “I HAVE HERPES” to the entire world. And cold sores cost us money in lost days at work and constant purchase of medications. Always hoping to finally find something - ANYTHING - to stop our cold sores curse. Check out these little known facts about cold sores - and what you can do right now to get rid of your cold sores problem. Cold sores are caused by the reproductive cycle of a herpes virus. There are currently 8 known human herpes viruses. Of these, only 2 are a major cause of cold sores. Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV1) is responsible for about 80% of facial cold sores - and about 20% of genital herpes lesions. Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV2) causes about 20% of cold sores and 80% of genital herpes blisters. HSV1 is most often referred to as the cold sores virus, fever blister virus and oral herpes - and some others that I cant mention in a public article. Cold sores virus may be latent (asleep) for weeks or years in the nerve ganglia near the back of the jaw close to the brain stem. More specifically, the cold sores virus hides inside your cells - making it very difficult for your body defenses to locate and deal with them. When your bodys defenses weaken, due to physical or emotional stress, the cold sores virus leaves these cells, travel down the nerve fibers, like a super-highway to the lip or nose surface - to create cold sores. There are 8 cold sore stages. The first is the latent inactive stage. The next 7 cold sore stages are the ACTIVE stages. From the first tingle to the last red spot, your cold sores are extremely contagious. Cold sores are most often spread by physical contact - but can even be transmitted by coughing or sneezing during the active stages of your cold sores. Medical science is working around-the-clock to find a cure for common cold sores. Theyve had a few minor breakthroughs that may lead to some real solutions in the next couple of years. Basically medical scientists are approaching the cold sores virus on 2 levels. 1. A VACCINE preventing you from actually contracting the cold sores virus in the first place. One such vaccine is currently being moved into human testing. Downside is - it only works on people who have never been exposed to cold sores virus. Since nearly everyone on the planet has been exposed, it seems of very little value even if approved. But its an encouraging move forward. 2. AN ANTI-VIRAL to kill the cold sore virus already in our body. This is difficult since it has to find and kill the virus without damaging the nerve cells they are hiding in. The prescription anti-viral medications scientists have come up with so far have not worked very well at all - at least on cold sores virus. Acyclovir, for example, is an anti-viral thats being promoted as a cold sores wonder drug. In real life studies, however, a course of acyclovir only reduced cold sores by 2 days. And it only worked for 47.8% in the trials. No big deal here. Acyclovir topical cream came in even worse - no noticeable help at all. Medical scientists agree and have publicly stated that the actives in acyclovir don’t get through the skin to the infection. Don’t waste your money on this. COLD SORES NATURAL SCIENCE TO THE RESCUE! Did you know - medical knowledge has more than doubled in the past 5 years alone? Worldwide internet communication has made it possible. More important - natural home remedies, such as effective cold sores treatments, are coming in from all corners of the globe. In fact, many doctors are now advising their patients to check out these natural remedies for cold sores. Data studies have shown these natural remedies to reduce suffering time of cold sores by an incredible 79% - plus actually PREVENTING future cold sores from happening altogether (they don’t kill the cold sores virus - but they do keep it inactive indefinitely). If you’re a cold sores victim, your best choice - fact is, your ONLY choice today - is to buy and apply one of these excellent natural remedies. There are several solidly proven remedies for you to look into on this site or other sites - and the best news is they’re available right now for your cold sores. Teaching Moments - 24 Gold Coins

By John Bishop A man I know was given six months to live, yet his outlook on life was inspiring. I asked how he could stay so positive knowing he only had a short time to live. He shared these thoughts with me. Each day when I wake up I receive twenty-four gold coins, one for each hour of the day. I have to spend some of those coins for eating, sleeping, time with my family, and taking care of the days responsibilities. I choose to spend some of my daily hours (coins) having fun and helping others. At the end of each day there are usually a couple of special gold coins left over. I spend these with particular care. What an invaluable life lesson for us and our children. We live in a hectic, there is never enough time to get everything done world. Our future success, and that of our children, will be determined by how wisely we invest our daily gold coins. Suggestions for implementation: Some ideas for spending your special gold coins include: 1. Helping someone without being asked 2. Starting a new book or project that you have been meaning to get to. 3. Spending an extra thirty minutes a day on homework Questions for discussion: 1. How did you spend your gold coins yesterday? Today? 2. Discuss with your family how you might spend your coins more wisely. Please visit www.TeachingMoments.com for more life skills ideas. By Nicky VanValkenburgh Tis the season of candy and sweet treats. Chocolate santas, marshmallow snowmen, homemade cookies, pies, cakes, and candy canes are everywhere. Yummy treats are offered to us left and right. They’re hard to resist. Do you need a strong, compelling reason not to indulge in sweets? Perhaps you have a health concern, want to lose weight, or simply want to watch what you eat. If you need a little help or motivation to stay away from treats, consider the following: 1. Sweets are addictive! Like potato chips, its hard to eat just one piece of candy, a cookie, a slice of cake or pie. Have you ever noticed the lust that sweets trigger? You eat one piece, and rage sets in. You want more. You must have it! Youll do anything to get it. The urge is hard to resist. The reason that sweets trigger lust is because the manufacturers have added taste enhancers that cause you to crave more and more. The reason they do is to get you physically addicted to their products. Of course, when you continue to eat and buy more sweets, its good repeat business for them. 2. Sugar is a sweet-talking moocher! Nothing is worse than a freeloader. A moocher who takes from you, and never gives back. Unfortunately, sugar leeches vitamins and minerals from your body. To digest sugar, you need B-complex vitamins, calcium and magnesium. Complex carbohydrates (raw fruit and vegetables) contain enough of these nutrients to digest and convert into energy. However, simple refined sugars (white or brown) are difficult to digest. Your body must rob its own resources to digest them. Where are these nutrients leeched? Vitamin B-complex is taken from your central nervous system. Calcium is robbed from your teeth and bones. Over time, eating sugar will result in Vitamin-B deficiency. This will cause you to suffer from nervousness, forgetfulness, fatigue, anxiety, rage, depression, indigestion, lack of appetite, craving for more sweets, neuralgia and neuritis, muscle soreness, headaches, insomnia, and dizziness. 3. Sugar weakens your immune system. When you eat sugar, it weakens your white blood cells, which are an important part of your immune system. White blood cells protect your body from foreign invaders (such as cancer cells) who attack your body and try to make you sick. When white blood cells are weak, they dont have the strength to fight back. In other words, they cant do their job. Ultimately, eating candy weakens your immune system. Are you ready to fight back? Being aware of the hidden dangers of sugar will motivate you to get fresh. Thats right; push that candy away. Just say no. Reach for something that is good for you. Bite into a tart green Granny Smith apple, eat a handful of juicy berries, a tangy tangerine, or fresh cut pineapple. Keep healthy alternatives on hand so that you can resist sweets. If you cant give up sweets, limit yourself to a small portion. Throw the rest away! Change your focus, so that you can resist those nutritionally empty, good-for-nothings who only end up hurting you. Decide in advance that youll be the one getting fresh now that youre wise to sugars sweet little game of deceit.
